Learning

Education and prosperity are closely linked, and successful cities depend on continuous learning.

Why it matters:

Toronto students are graduating at a rate higher than ever before:

    - In 2013, 83% of TDSB students graduated from high schools, an increase of 14% since 2000.

The teacher/student ratio in the Region’s public schools is improving:

    - There were 87.7 teachers for every 1,000 students in 2012, compared to 67.8 in 2007.

Ontario has some of the highest university tuition fees in the country which makes post-secondary education out of reach for many:

    - Annual tuition and fees for full-time university undergrads in Ontario were estimated at $8,403 for 2013-14 (in 1990 they

averaged $2,574). By 2016, tuition is projected to reach $8,756 (a 240% increase over 26 years).

Is Toronto’s childcare accessible to those who need it?

    - $20 million in provincial funding allowed the City to add 668 new subsidized childcare spaces in 2014

    - However, almost 17,000 low-income children were waiting for subsidies in March 2014 (10% lower than in 2013).
